Read Absinthe

Background to This Story

In Absinthe a naive young American woman encounters destiny in France as World War II is breaking out. The story was inspired by letters written in the 1930s between my grandmother and her lifelong “dear friend” Esme. In her time, my grandmother hosted a salon for people my parents liked to call “artistic.”  Staying at her home as a child, I met a cast of characters I have often yearned to write about.  “Madame” in Absinthe is my snapshot of one of these, a fascinating woman who knew who I was even then. The heroines in Absinthe are not 21st Century women transplanted back in time; they reflect their era. I hope you enjoy their story.
